Full-time, 18-month contract position

Do you want to create lasting change in the field of animal welfare in Canada? The Canadian Federation of Humane Societies, Canada’s voice for animal welfare representing humane societies and SPCAs across the country, is launching an industry-wide standards and certification program. We are currently seeking a dynamic and creative program architect to join our energetic team! The Certification Program Manager will be responsible for the design and development of a robust peer-review-based program for humane societies and SPCAs in Canada. They will work closely with a broad range of stakeholders to establish the framework, standards, training and accreditation process for the humane sector within an 18-month timeframe.

Key Responsibilities

  • develops, implements and evaluates a robust certification program for humane societies and SPCAs
  • works closely with CFHS member societies to align program standards with industry best practices and establishes partnerships with key charitable sector stakeholders
  • convenes and facilitates a strong and cohesive CFHS Steering Committee with subject area specific sub-committees to guide standards development
  • finalizes the program framework and areas of certification
  • develops and implements a consistent system for identifying and setting industry standards and ensures clear standards for each identified area of the program
  • establishes and maintains rapport with key partners in the charitable sector to deliver the program
  • identifies Learning Management Systems for training and development of organizations interested in standards and accreditation
  • provides staff, board and members with regular program updates and summaries
  • develops options and recommendations for a robust pilot program
  • identifies and pre-qualifies pilot organizations from different levels
  • manages and evaluates the pilot certification program, providing a detailed report to CFHS staff, board and members
  • implements recommendations on final framework based on pilot evaluation
  • launches certification program

Education Requirements

University degree in a related field including animal welfare, public policy/administration, conservation (Master’s degree preferred), plus 3 years of work experience in a management or research position OR equivalent level of progressive related work experience in lieu of post-secondary education.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • demonstrated knowledge of policy research and analysis
  • familiarity with qualitative and quantitative research methods with excellent literature search and cross-jurisdictional scan skills
  • able to work with multiple stakeholders, facilitate change and find win/win solutions
  • experience managing integrated programs with internal and external audiences
  • excellent written and verbal communications skills, with the ability to write compelling reports/copy for different audiences
  • knowledge of animal welfare in Canada and experience in animal sheltering
  • able to work autonomously, as well as part of a team, in a flexible, fast-paced environment
  • high degree of professionalism with the ability to prioritize to meet required deadlines
  • English fluency is essential; bilingual (English/French) an asset
  • understanding of and commitment to principles and values espoused by the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies
